Summary
The man was squatting next to him when he opened his eyes. He saw his boots first; smelled smoke and tobacco and was briefly struck by the stark contrast to the wet rot of the rest of the place.
He looked up, peeling his face off the floor, to find the man staring down at him, inscrutable as always behind his round sunglasses.
“Shit luck,” the man said.

Summary
“Testy,” Karl said, grinned mean. “Someone wake up on the wrong side of the bed?”
“Fuck you,” Ethan said.
Karl’s fingers twisted into his shirt and pulled him forward, almost out of his chair. He scrambled to get his hands up, yanking at Karl’s own, to little effect. “Real testy there, Ethan,” Karl growled, “when I’m here trying to have a civil conversation.”
“Civil!” Ethan barked out a laugh. “This is civil then?”
Karl smiled, all teeth. “You started it.”

Summary
“Karl, what the fuck?” he hissed. Had wondered why Karl’d insisted on bringing the hammer.
Karl hefted the thing back up as if it weighed nothing, clumps of snow dropping from it as he brought it back up to rest against his shoulder.
“We’re gonna jog your memory,” he said, grinning. Then he adjusted his grip on the hammer and swung it, forcing Ethan to dodge again.
“If I had known,” Ethan bit out, scrambling out of the way of another blow, “that you were going to pull this shit, I wouldn’t have agreed to come out here.”
“Just trying to help here, Ethan,” Karl laughed, the sound drawing out into guffaws as Ethan cursed at him, rolling away from another blow.
“Oh, fuck you,” Ethan said, keeping his distance as Karl prowled forward.
Karl merely leered at him. “Would be amenable to that, too,” he said.

Summary
Karl tried to shove Ethan again, and was met with no more luck than he’d been previously.
This was not at all like how he remembered death, and frankly he thought it was downright unfair that this bastard would kill him and then somehow manage to haunt his stupid dying brain, or whatever the fuck this was.
“Mia?” Ethan said again, sounding unsure; confused. He looked around the room, grip tightening on the ax, before following a blood trail back out into the hall and around the corner.
“What the hell are you looking for now? Doubt your wife’s in there,” Karl muttered at him.
He could leave, he knew. Try to, anyway. Just go back outside and start walking; see how far he could go.
But Ethan was here for some fucking reason, and he needed to know why.

Summary
Charlie was laughing, had been laughing the whole time. It sounded like he kept trying to speak but couldn’t get the words out beyond his laughter.
“What is it with you and cats,” Dion asked, unwilling to touch any of the rest of it.
“Cats are God’s perfect creatures,” Lobo said, in the tone of voice that seemed to say and if you disagree you are asking for a fight.

Summary
“Why the hell do I even need to be here? Couldn’t you have just picked some shit out? You’d know more about what would let us blend in anyway, not me.”
Ethan sighed, “I don’t know what size you wear.” He turned down an aisle that apparently led through the children’s section if the increase in eye-gouging colors and contorted cartoon faces was anything to go by.
Karl passed a display of shirts featuring cartoon dogs dressed as cops for some damn reason, Paw Patrol emblazoned in English over each of them.
It was incomprehensible.

Summary
“Eh,” John said with a shrug, going on to add at Ethan’s look, “Everything’s fine, we’re all code green here.” Then, noticing Karl, he broke into a wide grin, “How’s married life treating you, big guy?”
Karl leaned forward a bit, sandwich close enough that Ethan could smell the pickles and mustard. “Every day is bliss,” he replied.
