Summary
"You always knew it was gonna end like this for me. It was supposed to end like this, right?”
If the brothers were truly “finally free,” as they say in the penultimate episode, then their fates shouldn’t have been compelled by a “supposed to.” Something went wrong, and Chuck wasn’t actually defeated. The Supernatural finale is the work of a “cruel, cruel, capricious God”… and you’re meant to notice. But don’t take my word for it; pay attention. Because the show told us what happened in-narrative and out-of-narrative, as loudly as it possibly could.

THE HOW: Chuck’s Method of Victory by chuckwon (alwaysanoriginal)

Summary
So, let’s presume that Chuck won, and that it’s arguable that it was potentially authorial intent. It follows that, logically, the writers should have included a plausible in-story explanation for how Chuck was victorious. I propose there is a strong possibility that Chuck took over Jack’s body in some capacity, and the evidence of it and reason for it is all embedded into the story too.

THE WHY: Chuck’s Framework & The Story’s Themes by chuckwon (alwaysanoriginal)

Summary
At the risk of being accused of blasphemy, it must be said that citing Supernatural's original premise as having been solely “about brothers” isn’t quite accurate, and it never has been. From the very start, the show was centered around parents and children, and the cycles of trauma that are perpetuated when love is tied to expectations, cost, and sacrifice.
Here are two of the show’s consistent primary themes: siblings who struggle with stifling codependency and imbalance; and a cycle of violence between parents and children that’s fueled by the burden of expectations and intergenerational trauma.

Summary
When Jack is born, Dean, Cas, and Sam’s placements in the story change. They shift into roles that echo the original Winchester family dynamic on a metanarrative level, and that initially continue the pervasive pattern of Chuck’s Framework in a different way. However, as the story progresses, the characters quickly go on to repeatedly subvert Chuck’s Framework through the powers of true free will, chosen family and–in the case of Dean and Cas–queer love.

THE VICIOUS CIRCLE: Season 15’s Unbroken Loop by chuckwon (alwaysanoriginal)

Summary
The concept of cycles of violence is the backbone of Chuck’s thematic Framework and thus of Supernatural as a story. I also posit that it is purposefully ingrained into the plotlines of season 15. The literal events echo the metaphorical themes, emphasizing the Trap the characters are in and clarifying the state of the story as it currently stands after the finale.
Welcome to what I like to affectionately refer to as “loop theory.”

THE PURPOSE: The Significance of Real-World Censorship by chuckwon (alwaysanoriginal)

Summary
Chuck’s function in the story explicitly exists to be an allegory for the real world; as a result, you cannot divorce Chuck’s in-narrative victory from its out-of-narrative implications. More precisely: you cannot divorce the final season of this story–and particularly its ending–from the fact that it explicitly acts as narrative commentary on the fact that Supernatural is a censored text.

Summary
As it stands now, Supernatural is poised to be able to make no-holds-barred television history.
It’s not a matter of if there’s a sequel but rather a matter of when. The true “if” will be whether or not that eventual sequel will be done in a way that meets the full extent of its potential.
