“Strawberry again?” Denji recalled eating this yesterday, bought by the same certain someone as today, but he took the plastic fork from Yoshida and dug in anyway.
“What do you want tomorrow, then?”
Tomorrow. Yoshida was solidifying himself into Denji’s daily routine once more. A part of Denji wanted to scowl, to lash out and assert that he didn’t need a damn bodyguard to survive a day of high school, but the bigger part of him wanted to say:
“Chocolate.”
Denji knew he was a sitting duck, a perfect target for some kind of danger he couldn’t quite pinpoint right now. All he knew was that, one day, Yoshida would try to kill him, just like everyone who’d attempted to befriend him had done in the past. Whether by his own will or not, Yoshida would hurt him. This was all a job to him anyway, and when his organization stopped paying? Denji knew what came next.
“Alright. Chocolate it is.”
But for now, as long as Yoshida kept being nice to him, Denji supposed he could stay.
Why does everything Denji touch decay? And why does Yoshida know that better than anyone else?

“‘Run away…’” Denji echoes, digesting the words but not the offer. “What…?” His features twist like wringing hands, and Yoshida almost reaches out to smooth the wrinkles between Denji’s brows. “Why are you asking that all of a sudden?”
“So it’s a no?” Yoshida tilts his head, feigning the same coyness he’s sure he was born with. Or was that something the Civilian Hunters taught him too?
“It’s not a no,” Denji spits, too quickly. The slice he’s holding between his fingers turns to mush under the force of his grip. “It’s just… Why? What aren’t you telling me?”
It’s not a lie when Yoshida smiles, when he lets his eyes soften in response to the slow split of his lips.
It’s surrender.
Denji will always be Yoshida's weakness.
