On Halloween night, Alistair finds a very large stray dog collapsed on his lawn. Somehow this only worries him a normal amount.

When he shifts to sit on the damp grass, the dog waits patiently and then shoves itself further into his lap, draping as much of its upper body over his legs as will fit.
This isn't a stray. It hasn't got a collar, but it's clearly used to humans.
"What happened to you?" Alistair murmurs, gently stroking down its side. He can't find any trace of a wound, and it doesn't react like it's in pain. It's more like it's been run off its feet by something else, something bigger.
