Summary
Erestor let his head fall to the chill stone, eyes closed as he listened for one particular voice. Glorious and bright, like a bonfire in the depths of winter, Glorfindel blazed no matter where he went. He had been Erestor's true north from the moment Erestor had set eyes on him, coming out from the shadows of the path and into the courtyard, as beautiful as the dawn.

Summary
The voices sang far off in the valley, “Sing now! Sing to the sky! Hail! Hail! Come by!” Erestor raised his head and listened to the laughter, listened to the chorus ringing out again and felt his mouth curl into a reluctant smile. It had been strange, at first, to hear the elves of Imladris sing out in such a fashion. The elves of the East rarely sang so loud, so unafraid of others hearing. They had learned to guard their silence, to quiet their steps, for there were more than Men about who would prey on unassuming elves in the wilds of the far far East.

Ecthelion stared out over the sea, eyes straining, but no glimpse of a boat could be seen. It had been long Ages since Glorfindel left, but still Ecthelion came to the sea once a day, just to look, just to hope, to see a faint sail on the horizon, bringing his beloved home.

There was a hush over the valley. Still and soft, the snow sifted down, a fine powder that clung to everything in its path. Erestor curled a leg under him, leaning a little to look out the window, watching the reunion below.

Summary
The Fell winter brought about many changes to the Shire. Gone were the colorful hobbit holes, the bustling markets, the cheerful pubs. Gone were the orderly fields, the neat hedge-rows, the clean lines of the kitchen gardens. Swift did the hobbits of the Shire learn that where marks of habitation were left, quick came the paws and then the swords of enemies eager to eat them and their stores down to the bones.

Summary
The crunch of ice behind Erestor made him sigh. He knew without turning that Glorfindel would be standing at the top of the hill, feet just denting the crusted ice that had formed over the heavy snow that had fallen during the winter storm. It wasn't fair. Erestor wasn't the one who humiliated himself in front of a host of noble elves from around Arda in the Hall of Fire. No, that award went to Glorfindel, who thought, in his drunken stupor, to tell them all of Erestor's letter where he had confessed his feelings to the great blond oaf. The lovely little letter had become the topic of multiple rounds of poetry, much to Erestor's horror. Even Bilbo tried to stop it, and the old hobbit loved to meddle in love affairs.

They had been bred in a black tower, born in pits with black sand and bloody mud. They spent the first decade of their life in the dark, eyes gleaming yellow-bright with reflected torchlight. The air was loud with howls and screams, the harsh laughter of the orc jailers and the whimpers of the creatures caught and brought in cages to be experimented on.

Mahal's Halls spread through every mountain range in Aman. Dori had listened to his brothers go on about their adventures, how Ori had found the company of scribes in the Mountain's vast libraries and how Nori had joined the ranks of Spymasters of old. Dori had smiled and sat back, content to listen as the rest of their Company found new lives in the seat of their Maker's Halls.

Summary
Bella blinked and she could see Thorin's smile, the way tiny lines appeared around his eyes, making him come alive and not be some stern statue that disapproved of her always. She blinked again and she was dangling from his fist, the ground so far below her and only madness in his eyes. Blink and the eagles were coming. Blink and Gandalf had arrived to heal Thorin and the boys. Blink and she was at Beorn's and vomiting her lungs out, already knowing that she had a babe on the way. Blink and she was giving birth at Rivendell, screaming formless words to keep from calling Thorin's name. Blink and she was at the White Council, watching them come to the realization that her pretty little ring was the One Ring of Sauron and her whole world came crashing down around her. Yet again.

“This is not the way. This is not the path that needs to be. There are always choices in this world,” Varda blinked and it felt like a thousand pounds of pressure slammed into Erestor's chest. All the breath rushed from him when her gaze focused, clear and bright, on him. She smiled. “Choose wisely,” she said and something seemed to snap around them, echoing louder and louder until it was all he could hear. Then between one breath and the next, Erestor screamed.

Thorin opened his eyes with a gasp, breath escaping him as he fell to his knees. He could hear Bilbo and Dwalin arguing. He could smell the fire and smoke on the wind. His heart still beat in his chest. He could...he could...he was alive. How? How could this be? How could this – his blood ran cold as he looked around. He looked up, listening to Bilbo as he told them of the other army coming to surround them all. This could not be. This could not be.

The glitter of moonlight on the icy snow highlighted the ringing silence of the night. Erestor folded his hands in his sleeves and looked up, eyes tracking the shooting star that split the sky. All was quiet, all was calm. The hairs on the back of his neck stood on end but he held still, waiting.

The pressure was too much. Thorin stared up at his greatest enemy and knew that his strength would not hold. Azog's sword would strike him down while Thorin struggled to breathe, laying like a worm on the ground. It was an easy choice, in the end, to let the blade slide home, even as Thorin killed his enemy with the last of his strength.

Summary
Snow spiraled from the sky, the thick flakes falling so fast it looked like a white curtain being dropped over the cemetery. Erestor buried his face into his scarf, his eyes dry and hot, too tired to cry anymore. Gil-galad had been kind to him over the years, taking Erestor in when Elrond had dragged Erestor home one day. Gil-galad's house had been far and away better than the crowded orphanage Erestor had grown up in.

Summary
Glorfindel pushed his hood back, the thick, wet snow falling all around him. He glanced over at Ecthelion, who shrugged and bit into the shiny red apple they had haggled off an old woman at the crossroads. The forest stretched out in front of them, deep and dark, without a trail or road in sight. They were due at Formenos, at the gathering of hunters called by King Fëanor of the Fiery Spirit. A quest had been put forth to all the adventures and hunters of the land. To find the King's grandchild, a young man who had been swept away by bandits at a young age, never to be seen again. A king's ransom was the reward, chests of gold, gems by the bucketful, and even a title and a castle bestowed by the King.
