Summary
“I did not think you capable of such, to be frank, blatant rudeness, Mr. Screwllum,” Ratio says on their way out of the restaurant, cooperation contract with the museum director in hand, slightly amused, more wary.
Screwllum walks at a steady and relaxed pace. Unlike some people, he does not seem to feel the need to show his importance in the strength of his stride, nor give the impression of busyness with its quickness. He walks like he speaks - calmly, surely, no matter if he is heading towards a fine meal or a life-or-death situation.
“I would caution you against making assumptions of what I am capable of, Mr. Ratio,” Screwllum replies, tone friendly.

Tempted by curiosity, Ratio abandons his search and pulls the box out. It drags against the bottom shelf with some weight. He flips open the lid.
A large pile of thick white fabric lies within. It isn’t until Ratio picks it up, letting it billow out under his hands, that he sees what it is and recognizes it.
It’s not that he’s seen it before in person - he’s only seen it in one place before. Screwllum’s portrait. He’s holding Screwllum’s old cape.

Ratio is laying on his side on the bed, curled in a large and perfectly circular nest of blankets. When Screwllum had announced himself, his head had popped up - his hair is rumpled and sticking slightly to his forehead with a faint sheen of sweat, and his golden eyes glow intensely in the shadows.
The blackout curtains are drawn. There’s only a small gap between them, letting a sliver of light through, just light enough to see, gold running over the floor and spilling between the folds of the covers, a bright streak falling over Ratio’s pale calf.
“You’re here.” Ratio’s voice is rough.
Screwllum observes. This is pre-heat. Ratio’s heat must not be in full effect. He still has some inhibition, some control over himself.

“Will you really not take on another collaborator for the Divergent Universe if I refuse you?” Ratio asks. Screwllum reluctantly pulls his gaze away from the window and turns to face him - a furrow is forming between Ratio’s brows. “An illogical course of action. Why? There are plenty of worthy researchers at your fingertips.”
Screwllum looks at him for a long moment. He thinks. He realizes he doesn’t quite know the answer either.

The assassination of Screwllum I is the critical moment that will start the Third Anti-Organic War.
Ratio has seen it. He’s lived it. He knows that, by the end of the Third War, there will be no winners - only losers - no peace treaties - only destruction - no debates about inorganics versus organics; everything will be reduced to ash and death.
It will be, for all intents and purposes, the end of the Universe.
And as the last survivor of the reincarnation-blessed, spacetime-travelling species of philosophers that once populated the Laurel Wreath Galaxy, he’s the only one who can stop it.
So he goes back in time to save Screwllum.
