Summary
DS Charles Rowland is 35, and loves being a copper. He finally found something he was good at after nearly 30 years of achieving nothing. He wants to help people, wants to make a difference and thought he was going to be able to do that in London. But now he's been moved to a new patch, and given a new boss to report to.
DI Payne is a genius. At 34, he's the youngest person to make DI in 50 years. He's the best of the best, everyone will tell you that. Unfortunately that'll probably be the second thing they tell you. First they'll tell you he's rude, unapproachable and thinks he's better than everyone else. They might even tell you about the colleagues he's supposedly made cry, and definitely made request a transfer.
But he doesn't care if you know that. All he cares about is finding Becky Aspen, before it's too late and she becomes another girl who's death he hasn't been able to solve.

Summary
Everyone said DI Payne was difficult to work with, if not impossible. His lack of people skills was beaten only by his lack of a sleep schedule. At one point there had been a rumour going around that he was actually part-robot. That would explain why he was the youngest DI in half a century, and why he made inexperienced colleagues cry with his blunt manner.
He was an oddity. A bit of an in-joke.
But now, somehow, he had found himself a partner who seemed not only immune to his rudeness but quite taken with it. And so he and DS Charles Rowland had solved their missing person's case. They'd reunited Becky Aspen with her family and were now on the hunt for the serial killer that had kidnapped her. Even stranger than that- the DI had been caught smiling.
