Summary
Bill Fraser was uncomfortable.
He was tired.
His bones ached and his skin felt rubbed raw.
Worst of all, he had sand in places he didn’t even want to think about.
And yet as he bounced across the desert in the back of one of the groups trucks none of that really mattered for their mission had been a success.
He longed for a drink of water but with the violent way the truck was moving he daren’t unscrew the cap on his canteen – water was far too precious to spill all over himself.
It was as he was checking his watch that he heard it.
An engine.
A plane engine.

Summary
At the far end of the ward lay a man who should be dead.
Remarkable though this sounded he was in good company, every man on the ward deemed a miracle by the men and women caring for them for having survived injuries that at first glance should have sent them into an early grave.
Some were quiet.
Some screamed, from pain or nightmares or both.
Others spoke of home, anxious for their “ticket to Blighty” as it had been called in the last war and would be again by those lucky or, indeed, unlucky enough to receive one.
And then there was the man at the far end.
He was silent.

Summary
They had been warned about the men they were being sent to join.
Rough men.
Wild men.
Dangerous men.
They’d thought they were prepared, that they knew what to expect and knew to what to say and how to act when they climbed out of the trucks and formed up for inspection.
No one had told them that half of them were bloody mad.
At first glance Major David Stirling seemed sane enough, if wild, with a full beard and piercing blue eyes, his skin tanned where it was visible and hair dry and oily all at once.
Captain Blair “Paddy” Mayne, on the other hand, did not.
