Summary
A violent jolt shook the train, wrenching the two away from one another. Carmen teetered backwards and Gray fell into his seat, panicked eyes finding one another with confusion filled to the brim.
But before either could say something that would ruin it all, a second shock came, and suddenly Carmen was falling, falling down onto him.
His legs were set apart, and the young woman’s body rolled right between them before she could catch herself, her hips shimmying against his lower half. Before she could regain her balance, a sound parted from his lips. It was low and uncontrolled, sharp like an exclamation of pain but tinged with something - something else.
Carmen’s breath hitched. The realization of what had occurred hit her all too suddenly.

Carmen found his hair, her skilled fingers weaving into his messy, slicked back curls. She traced the sides of his face, thumbed at his eyelashes. Gray was too wounded to pull her closer, so he settled for cupping her cheek. His eyes dropped to her mouth, the sly sheen of red that too often these days curled in villainy. Too often took pleasure at the suffering of others. But he was weak in the way of her whims. He was weak for her, period.
