Shane Started. “Well, I’ve been doing some reading, on the IIHF. Y'know, their rules and stuff. I was thinking, now that you have a Canadian passport, maybe you didn’t have to stop playing in the tournaments. I mean- you don’t have Russian citizenship anymore, so it doesn’t make sense for you not to be allowed to play anywhere… so I went through the rulebook for a nationality transfer.”
Shane pulled up a document on his phone and turned the screen for Ilya to see. Big bold letters flashed in front of Ilya’s face: Application to Change National Eligibility.
Ilya stayed silent. His brain was still having trouble computing what Shane had just said to him. He hadn’t even realized this was an option for him, but now that he knew it was all he wanted to do. There was a real possibility that he could compete with Shane for Canada.

Summary
As they were putting away the bowls and cups they had brought to the living room, Ilya said to Shane:
“Okay, maybe I give up on Mazepin. Was worth a shot. This is Verstappens year, so I can't hop ship now.”
Ilya had been a Verstappen fan for years, Shane knew that. He knew that he'd want Shane to join him as a Verstappen fan aswell, but there was a different driver who caught his eye at the Grand Prix. That driver was Lewis Hamilton.

Ilya Rozanov is excited for there to be a Russian, Nikita Mazepin, on the 2021 grid, so he starts talking to Shane about F1. After he quickly learns that Mazepin is not the hero to bring glory back to Russia, he returns to being a Verstappen fan (which he has been for years).
Shane decides to make an effort to get into F1 for his Fiancee, but quickly learns that maybe Canada isn't as good at motorsports as they are at hockey. As he watches, there's one driver that he takes a liking to: Lewis Hamilton.

Summary
When he joined Ilya’s line as the center, he thought that having his husband by his side would be the best thing to happen to the two of them: they trusted each other, cared about the game, and cared for each other. Both him and Ilya had particular things about their hockey performance that kept them professional on the bench and he liked it like that. Shane felt that he and Ilya would be able to maximize their communication and production on the ice, or he hoped so. It was his beautiful husband under that helmet, after all.

Shane and Ilya are line mates. It doesn't go as well as they both hoped, causing some strain in their relationship.

When Ilya had received Shane’s number earlier that year, he assumed that its use would be strictly for sex-related activities. But, just 6 months after exchanging numbers, his phone lit up with a notification from “Jane”:
Jane: Palat was drafted far too low.
Lily: Who?
Jane: Ondrej Palat. Forward. TBL just took him 208th overall. Absolute steal.
Ilya put his phone back in his pocket and kept walking. He didn’t care enough about Orange Pilates, or whatever his names was. Shane was no better than one of the scouts; he was making a prediction. He was certain that Shane’s words would be forgotten and the man he mentioned would disappear into obscurity once again.

OR: Shane Hollander knows the game better than anyone. So much that he can somehow predict which guys will be considered the "steals" of the draft. Ilya is not so convinced. Together, they spend the next 14 years making crazy predictions, until one day Ilya finally "out-scouts" Shane.
