“Hello! Are you new here?”
It’s a girl, Yelena notices. She looks five, like her. She has her shiny dark hair in a ponytail and big blue eyes. At first, Yelena does what’s natural to her and avoids eye contact, but she eventually remembers that her parents say it’s rude and looks into her eyes. They’re very blue. Like the ocean. Somehow, it’s not quite as weird to make eye contact with her.
Yelena knows she isn’t supposed to talk to strangers, so she lets the other girl know, in case she didn’t hear that rule before. “You aren’t supposed to talk to people you don’t know.”
“I know. My Mommy tells me that.” The other girl tilts her head. “But you know what, what if we tell each other our names? Then we won’t be strangers anymore.”
That sounds like airtight logic to her. “Okay,” she replies slowly.
The girl holds out her hand.
“I’m Kate. Kate Bishop. What’s your name?”

It's 1995, and Natasha knows that they'll be returning to the Red Room soon. Fortunately, she has the perfect plan: run away with Yelena to Gotham City, the one place in the world that the Red Room doesn't have a foothold. Once they're there, it should be easy to blend in as normal kids and get a new family to take care of her and Yelena...right?
As tends to happen in Gotham, the plan doesn't quite go according to plan. Natasha quickly finds herself in the unenviable position of having to keep the two of them alive on Gotham's streets. Fortunately, she's managed to run into a local kid named Jason who knows the ropes and seems like he might be a good...ally.
