Summary
"The Fat Beatle." All it took were these three words to reroute John's existing self-loathing to a new, exceptionally catastrophic form. In 1965, John rapidly plunges into his first bulimic spiral, which Paul discovers and tries to end. Things fail to turn out as he hopes, until John has a second near-death experience in 1980, a decade after they last spoke to each other. The two are pushed back together- and Paul is determined to use the circumstances to help John defeat his past demons for good.
(In more concrete terms, John survives the 1980 shooting. However, since his separation with Paul, he has relapsed with his ED, and addiction problems. Much of the story is devoted to exploring the initial development of his ED, which in real life, seems to have peaked during the Beatles years. Also, there's a lot of absolutely saccharine moments of comfort from Paul, because I so wish John had received the love and support he desperately needed at the time)
