“Shit, shit,” Will scrambles to the floor-length mirror he’d found propped up on a dumpster at the end of his Freshman year. He pulled at his sweater and fluffed his hair. “Coming!”
He trips over his feet rushing to get to the door, before freezing to glance at the tiny apartment. His sketchbooks are everywhere, his bed is unmade, and he hasn’t scooped Bowie’s litter box today. There isn’t time to do anything about it now.
Taking a calming breath in, he yanks open the door.
There, in his doorway with a giant goofy grin, stands Michael Wheeler.

Michael had been out with his friends to camp.
The mountain near the forest was strictly off-limits for everyone (even royalty, and the most skilled explorers) because of the horrendous creatures living in the abyssal woods. Books describe them as scary, luring and blood-hungry species.
The party suffers an accident in which they separate temporarily, and Michael had the bad luck to be way too close to the bottom of the mountain.
There he sees a creature, a very beautiful one. Not like the ones described in books.
When his friends found him it was already gone. All of them warned Mike, saying he shouldnt trust his sight in such cursed place and that he shouldnt come back there no more.
But Mike has always had a rebel spirit and, without telling anyone, he goes there to investigate.
And now its been three days and Michael hasnt appeared yet.

Will is an unidentified being from the deepest, darkest parts of the forest, waiting for visitors to trick. In a punch of luck, he finds Mike.
Michael doesnt follow the rules and finds out the bad way why the mountain is forbidden territory for humans.

It had been seven years since the party officially ended in Mike Wheeler’s basement that night after graduation. His friends moved on without him; living the stories the paladin once wrote for his beloved cleric, his bard, his ranger, and his zoomer. Mike stayed in Indiana, he worked as an engineer, he came home to his cat and ate microwaved dinners. He had been drowning in a sea of conformity, grasping at the only lifeline that ever made sense to him, his imagination. He’d found solace in his writing, but he was always dreaming up happy endings for other people, never brave enough to find his three waterfalls like the mage. Until a reality check pushed Mike to start writing the story he always deserved to write, his own.
Or- Mike Wheeler ends up in New York with no plan, taking his book to writing conferences, wondering if his former best friend still lived in the city. Mike felt aimless, he was close to giving up and going back to Hawkins, until he saw a painting of his younger self hung in a prestigious gallery, with a plaque next to the frame reading, “First Love-W.B”. Mike’s world turned upside down once again, when he was faced with the reality that he’d always been too scared to admit. He had to find Will.
