Summary
McVries tells him about meeting Ray when he’d only just meant to be passing through Freeport. He casually asks Stebbins if he believes in soulmates while he’s elbow-deep in the ceiling, and when Stebbins freezes stock still on the ladder, he only laughs that easy laugh of his and keeps on describing their meet-cute like he wasn’t really expecting an answer anyway. It’s a sweet story. Romantic, at least in the way McVries tells it.
It’s the kind of story that twists Stebbins up in places he didn’t even realize could get knots until his smile looks like it hurts. It was love at first sight. McVries doesn’t ask if he believes in that, too, and Stebbins is grateful that he doesn’t have to stutter out an answer that he’s not entirely sure he knows.

Summary
“Aw man,” Pete said breathlessly, drawing back. He was leaning up on one elbow; their faces were inches apart. “Where’ve you been this whole time?”
The bravery he’d felt so briefly before suddenly ignited, blossoming under Pete’s gentle gaze and soft touches.
“Waiting for you, I reckon.” Replied Ray.
Ray meets Pete in a bar the night before the dropout deadline.

Summary
"The Major's my father," Stebbins spits out the words at the wheels of the half-track rumbling on in front of them with what little energy is left in his body. The red rim of his eyelids glimmer as he looks up at the Major. "I'm his bastard."
Ray stares at him. The actual meaning of his words take some time to penetrate the coldness in his chest that's slowing all his thoughts, but when they do, he looks at the Major to see his reaction. When he sees that there is none, he looks back at Stebbins, and the awful, raw edges of his expression, and then back to the Major, hoping for Stebbins' sake, that the man at least fucking reacts. However, when he looks back at the Major, he is no longer there. Instead, a cavernous hole decides to open up beneath the half track with a roar not too dissimilar to that of the carbines, swallowing the entire vehicle whole.
A moment later, a great watery crash rings out from miles below them.

Summary
Pete’s talking pretty now, telling Ray something about dancing and the moon. From the way he’s looking at him, they might as well be the only two people on the road. Forget the other boys, forget the cameras, forget the unblinking soldiers cradling their carbines, Garraty and McVries might as well be the last two slow dancers at the prom.
Or: Five walkers who think Pete will die for Ray, one who thinks Ray will die for Pete.

Summary
Pete twists his mouth to the side, rubs his nose, conscious of being observed. “No, I don’t know. I’ve been thinking about a lot of things. Just staying occupied.”
“The old escape hatch.”
“Yeah. Yeah, that’s right.”
“Okay.” Ray studies him a moment longer. “Well? Where’re we escaping to?”
