“Really? That’s the line you go with?” Regulus responds, making a show of putting his bookmark in his book and taking out one of his earbuds. James just interrupted him, not that there was any reading to interrupt.
James shrugs. “I’m out of practice, I guess. Is this spot taken?”
“That’s… that’s just sand.”

Summary
It’s important to remember that no one ever gets used to pain. Such a thing is impossible. Pain is the body’s way of letting its host know that something is wrong, that something has gone awry, isn’t as it should be. Sometimes, pain occurs despite no injury to the bones, or the softer, more delicate flesh they are housed within. Sometimes, pain is unrelenting, persistent, despite there being nothing to fix. Sometimes, certain conditions exacerbate what aches are already there.

“Have you considered the possibility that Neil has chosen you, but believes you have not chosen him?” Renee says. "Have you ever explicitly told him what you want?”
“Neil knows what I want,” Andrew snaps. This is not Andrew’s fault.
“How do you know?”
Because Neil always knows. He is as fluent in Andrew’s micro-expressions as he is in German and French. He knows which head tilts mean “go on” and which ones mean “shut up.” Without ever asking, he learned what it meant to see Andrew wearing double layers of long sleeves, or taking multiple showers in a day, and learned to hand Andrew the car keys.
That has always been the most terrifying thing about Neil — his patience to wait, watch, listen, learn. The prospect that if Neil were given enough time, there would be no part of Andrew that was just Andrew’s anymore.
“He has to know,” Andrew says.
“Does he?” Renee says. “Have you ever known Neil to assume that he is wanted?”
Five times Neil tells someone that he and Andrew aren’t dating, and one time Andrew uses his words to set the record straight.

Lucy was the first to break. “Gosh, I almost ate it,” she muttered before an undignified snort escaped her lips.
Horrified, she slapped both hands over her mouth, her face burning red. But Schroeder, still holding her, let out a snicker. Then another. Until he couldn’t hold back anymore, unable to contain the laughter spilled out at her expense.
Lucy’s mortification deepened. "Shut it! I’ll slug you!" she warned, attempting a swat at his cheek. She tried to appear stern, but the dimples digging craters at the corners of her smile proved her efforts futile. It was sluggish and poorly aimed, and he dodged it with ease, grinning all the while.
"Wonderful, Lucy. That snort was noteworthy.” He teased.
“Oh ha, ha.” She grumbled, “You think you’re sooo clever.”
