"Zoey lingered in the living room, sinking onto the couch for a moment. She stared at the faint light glowing beneath Mira’s door, listening to the muffled sound of their closeness. She told herself she was glad they had each other—because she was. They deserved that kind of love.
But when she finally padded down the hall to her own room, closing the door behind her, a pang twisted in her chest. She crawled into bed, pulling the blanket up to her chin, and scrolled absently through her phone until the words blurred.
She wished, just for a moment, that she could have joined them. That she could curl up beside them and let herself belong as fully as they belonged to each other.
She sighed, setting her phone aside. The apartment was silent now, but Zoey lay awake, staring at the ceiling. The ache was quiet, unspoken, but it lingered all the same.And in the hush of the night, as Mira and Rumi’s laughter faded to whispers behind their closed door, Zoey whispered to the empty room, “Goodnight.”
