“And who is that someone?” Will interrupts coldly. “Lucas? Dustin? You? Come on, Mike.”
Mike opens his mouth. Closes it. He looks away, his thumb absently dragging over the back of Will’s hand, almost like he doesn’t know he’s doing it. “When you came out… Do you remember what you said? About that guy being your Tammy?”
Will’s throat swells, his anger replaced by cold waves of panic. Where is this going? “Y-Yeah. So?”
“It was me, wasn’t it?”
OR
Mike and Will get drunk at a college party, where Will meets Carlton for the first time. When Mike hurts his hand, Will looks after him, and messy, jealous love confessions occur.

“I can relate,” Mike offered consolingly in response to Lucas’s rambling, squeezing Will’s hand as he said it. Warmth washed through Will all the way down to his toes at the words paired with the gesture.
“Exactly!” Lucas said, straightening up and fixing them with a manic sort of excitement. “So you guys get it.”
“Sure,” Will said. “Um…so what’s on December 15th?”
“I want to ask Max to marry me,” Lucas said in a rush.
For a second – just for one second – there was silence. Short enough that Lucas didn’t notice a thing. In that second, Will felt a flash of surprise, then excitement for his friends, as well as the accompanying, It’s about time! thought. But Mike…

His eyes followed El across the floor- the man seemed to know what he was doing, if their gliding was any indication. She laughed as he spun her, a hand planted safely on her waist, and a sudden thought occurred to Will.
Maybe, if this night went well, he wouldn’t be the only one to gain from it.
After all, no one deserved happiness more than El. She’d endured so much, so much more than anyone he knew, himself included, and if tonight was her ticket out, well then, maybe they could stay just a little longer. Maybe she’d find someone to love her tonight, to take her out of that house, away from those horrid Turnbows-
Something caught Will’s eye.
Shiny black curls, sleek and inky and-
And sitting beneath a golden crown.
Will’s stomach flipped.
Mike was here, all right. Oh Jove, was he here.
Will watched in horror as the prince made his way across the room, right towards Will.

“’Morning,” Mike grumbled, voice low from sleep.
“Noon,” Max corrected, as if she hadn’t only woken up thirty minutes before him.
“Wow,” he replied, squinting at the light. “Nobody thought to wake me?”
It happened casually after that, so casually it almost didn’t register at first. El laughed at something Lucas said, then turned toward Mike and leaned in, instinctively, easily, pressing a kiss to his lips like it was the most logical way to say good morning to him.

or: Mike and Will have been together for a year and a half when El comes back. The problem is, El assumes she and Mike are still together. The bigger problem is that Mike doesn’t realize Will thinks he might choose her.
