Abram stood on a beach in California watching the car that held his mother's body burn. In his right hand he clutched his duffle bag, which held his binder, his mother's gun, some spare clothes, and first aid supplies. His left hand clutched a list.

When Mary dies, Abram has a bit of a support network and a few more resources in place to help him through the aftermath. By the time he's recruited to be a Fox, he's a little less oblivious and is a little more sure about what he wants and how to stand up for himself. Stuart's early involvement keeps Nathan and the Moriyamas off his back, and Riko being put on a tighter leash keeps Andrew off the drugs and the Foxes mostly unharmed. As a result, Andrew has had a few more sober years to work out his sexuality, and he's able to work out his feelings about Abram with Betsy much earlier.
Basically, what if the boys were a little less traumatized, and Abram held a hell of a grudge about Columbia.
