It's a very rare occurrence to startle Batman, to leave him surprised, or even slightly shocked is an achievement. Batman is always prepared, always ready, what could possibly surprise him?
"Bat? What's going on?" Jason's voice is shaky as his little hands cling to Batman's cape, eyes wide as he turns in place, seeing all the adults staring down at him. He tucks himself under the cape, hiding as Batman stares at the spot he was standing, not even ten minutes ago.

If asked about it later, Bruce would blame it on sleep deprivation.
It wasn’t just the fact that it took more than two hours for his brain to catch up with what he had done—it was where it happened. Specifically, in the middle of an important Wayne Enterprises meeting with potential investors. He had trailed off mid-sentence while reviewing projections, blinking as the memory finally replayed in full in his mind.
He had kissed Clark.
Or, Bruce's brain takes a little longer to kick in the morning when he's doing the rounds and saying goodbye to everyone before he leaves for work.
