    Roy learned long ago not to put faith in fate, destiny, or any grand cosmic plan; such notions are easily hijacked by charismatic lunatics with rage in their hearts and blood on their hands. He should know. Debts, on the other hand, are concrete. Solid.

    This might explain why his first few months in Gotham vanish in a haze of miserable, bacchanalian excess. Things like him need a leash—or a heavy boulder to roll uphill—lest the demons in their hearts escape and devour the world. With no real purpose on the horizon, drinking and drugging his days away seemed like the safest option for everybody. Then Bruce Wayne saved him—and had the nerve to be interesting about it—and Roy has to consider that there might be more for him here than a short drop and a sudden stop.

    Fedil pauses, looking up from his notes very briefly. He doesn’t really know how to answer. Yes, but no. How to explain their family’s complicated relationship with sin and alchemy in the time they had before Teacher got back?

    When he takes too long to respond, Aquel repeats in Amestrian, “Brother?”

    “To some people,” Ed eventually answers. “Would you rather we didn’t talk about Alchemy this way?”

    “...what language did Dad speak?” Al asks instead of answering, and Ed realizes he doesn’t know.

    They take to alchemy like fish to water—They live, breathe and eat it. Their hands are perpetually covered in chalk and they fall asleep whispering the periodic table to themselves. They tear through every book Izumi throws at them. Every single word she tells them sinks beneath their very skin. Alchemy runs through their blood.

    Izumi Curtis isn’t bothered by the color of Al’s eyes or the fact that they have to dye his hair darker every few weeks. It only spurs her on to teach them more. The boys are ambitious, that much is clear to her, and she wants to do everything in her power to help them help themselves.

    Every day, she sees ambition in their eyes, but does not ask for their goal. Never asking will become one of her biggest regrets.
