    "Happy birthday!" Daniel croons, his grin hooking his mouth wide, eyes bright and glowing with pleasure between dark eyelashes.

    He holds out a small packet, haphazardly wrapped in colourful paper; a hint of pink dusts his cheeks, his heartbeat quickened with excitement and nerves; he smells sweet with it.

    Slowly, Armand takes the packet from him; it's light, and when he turns it over in his hands, it emits a quiet, gentle rattle.

    "Okay, birthday tutorial: at this point, we usually say 'thank you'."

    Nausea curdles in Guy’s stomach again. There’s no way, there’s supposed to be no way anyone could find him here. He’s in the goddamned middle of nowhere, in West Virginia, specifically because it’s a place that Guy Anatole—psychic, wannabe badass—would never, ever go. He’s been burned, somehow, and now fucking Jasper—because who else could J be—is after him. And unlike the last time he was burned, he can’t just run off with only the clothes on his back and a fake passport. He’s got back pain, and morning sickness, and, oh, yeah, in like four months he’s going to have a newborn. Where is he even going to run to?
