The morning was beautiful and bright. Sun streamed in through the windows, illuminating the floor of the castle’s ballroom as preparations were finalized for tonight’s grand ball.Kabru doesn’t know his name. Not the one he was born with. As far as he’s concerned, that knowledge died with his mother in Utaya.
Twenty years ago the dungeon of Utaya fell, and all of the residents of the town with it. All but Kabru. He was seven years old.He couldn’t remember much of his childhood, but he knew his mother had to run away with Kabru. He knew that his father’s family had threatened his life. He knew it was because his eyes were blue.
If they had been deep brown, hazel, if they’d been black, maybe his mother would still be alive. Maybe they would’ve stayed in whatever town or city Kabru had been born in. Maybe he would know his father.
