Danny’s face is—neutral, unreadable. Despair grips Steve’s throat. “I—you want to end things.” He swallows. “You know, break up.”
“I want to break up?” Danny echoes.
“You—” Steve’s resolve crumbles, but he presses on anyway. Like he does, like he always does—god, he’s so tired of it. “You—of course you do. After—after what’s happened. What I’ve done.”
Nothing shows on Danny’s face. “What have you done?”
Or when his mother's body goes missing, Steve has to deal with the consequences of both the choices he made and those that were made for him.

“You were there,” he hisses at her. “You saw the flowers. The doctor Dad saw –”
“Was a hack,” she scoffs.
“ – gave him a copy of the X-rays to prove what Mamo was saying was true!” His whisper raises in exasperation at the end. “Can we not argue about this again? Not right now.” He glances down at Joanie pointedly.
“I’m worried about you,” she says. “Do you plan on being single for the rest of your life?”
“Yes,” Steve says, firmly.

"Okay, what's this about?" Robby leads the way to back of the ER. "Somehow, I don't think it's a new patient."
"Actually, it is." Jack keeps his tone light, wry enough that Robby will find it familiar, before they're exiting the building and he adds, "52-year-old chief attending physician, Michael Robinavitch."
The hospital's automatic doors close, and they get enough distance to feel the evening breeze against their sweat-stained backs. Jack can hear Robby give an empty chuckle and ready his next clever jab, but Jack doesn't give him the time.
"Brother, I've already seen what you look like standing on the ledge. This is worse."
Post season 2, episode 13, in which Jack and Robby have a chat. A deal of sorts is struck.
