Summary
“Of course I would,” Rand said, so firmly and so unhesitatingly that a little shudder wracked Mat’s body and made him let out a shaky breath. “I’m here, Mat. I’ll always be here.”
His face had inched closer to Mat’s as they were talking, and now it was so close. Their noses were nearly touching, only a breath separating them.
And Rand wasn’t pulling away. Wasn’t pushing Mat away. He was staying with him.

Summary
Set sometime during A Crown of Swords, exploring a potential AU where Perrin is instead sent to Illian to oversee the war against Sammael since Rand is growing increasingly distrustful of the generals under his command while he orders Berelain to deal with Alliandre. Berelain and Faile finally confront each other and a lot more than words are exchanged.
“I have never wanted your husband,” Berelain said, laughing a little, as if she could still not believe Faile had not worked out her intentions. “You bone-headed fool, none of it was ever about Perrin Aybara. It was only that…” She hesitated. “If… If I could not have you, I would not let him have you either."

Summary
Blood and ashes, what had they been talking about? Mat had to go to Rhuidean, or else he’d die? He didn’t want to go to the bloody Aiel Waste! And what was that about dying and living again and giving up light and saving the world? Son of battles? None of that sounded like anything he wanted anything to do with.
And that other thing. To marry—? Light! Mat Cauthon, married! And to some bloody noble? A man? He didn’t even like men! Well, at least he had some warning now. When he met this Lord of the bloody Morning, whoever he was, Mat was going to run as fast as he could in the opposite direction.

Summary
He wished he could ask Mat for advice—he was so good at talking to girls, he would’ve known exactly what to do, if only the object of Rand’s affections had been anyone but him.
Maybe he could try Perrin? He was good with girls too…but would that even help? Rand didn’t need someone who was good with girls. He needed…wait a minute. He perked up as he realized something.
“Egwene,” he said, breaking the silence. “You know how to talk to boys, right?”

“I can’t believe a night here is more than a month at the Winespring Inn,” Rand said as he pushed open the door to their new room.
Mat shuffled in after him. “Better than the road.” He shouldered past Rand further into the room, and then he stopped in his tracks. “There’s…only one bed.”

Mat reminded himself that he’d been good enough for Rand in a little inn in Tar Valon. So why shouldn’t he be good enough for him in a fortress in Fal Dara where everyone bowed to him and called him “Lord Rand"?

“I’ll marry you a year from now,” Rand said; in Emond’s Field it was required that the betrothal last at least one year. “No matter where we are, even if we’re not back home, I’ll marry you next Bel Tine. That’s a promise.”
“Good,” Mat said. “Because you’d better not think you can use all this Aes Sedai and Dragon Reborn shit as an excuse to escape marrying me, al’Thor.”

Summary
He had flashes of an inn, people singing, dancing—himself dancing. Dancing with Rand. Red hair catching the light, strong hands on his waist, a brilliant smile meant only for him.
The snippets that were there were already making Mat’s heart ache, and he knew that getting any more details would only make it worse. But despite himself, he closed his eyes and tried to remember.

See, Mat hadn’t planned on doing this. He’d only even been over by that spiky bush to get as far away from Rand’s training session as possible, for his own wellbeing. And he knew his window of opportunity had passed, but then he’d seen the bush, and what was growing on it, and it was probably the sun and exhaustion and lack of water getting to him, but he’d decided maybe…maybe he didn’t need the window anymore. Maybe he could just try punching through the wall and seeing if he could still get in.

Summary
The Aelfinn tell Mat that he must tie himself to the Lord of the Morning if he doesn't want to be tamed and chained by the Daughter of the Nine Moons, but he struggles with accepting fate and trying to defy it. Rand has a complicated relationship with Asmodean and his duty, but the person he's always longed to be with is Mat.
The thought of tying himself to Rand should’ve been plainly a gladdening one, because he did want in every way to belong to him. Only, around Rand, Mat could no longer tell whether whatever the Pattern sent his way was a noose or a gift. Most of the time it did not matter—because it was Rand, and Mat had wanted him too long to be smart about anything around him—which he suspected was part of the problem. Some of his feelings for Rand were so deeply profound that Mat worried he would do foolish things—would trip into a pit of his own design and think falling was living.

So what if he wasn’t married to Rand, and would never wish to be, ever, under any circumstances? Pretending that he was opened a lot of doors for him among the Tairens, and Mat wasn’t about to turn down that opportunity. So long as Rand never found out about it.
