Summary
Ilya’s already tipsy. Already loose in that way Shane loves—shoulders loose, grin easy, eyes glittering with mischief that he knows means Shane’s going to spend the rest of the night either laughing or trying not to groan in public. Probably both.
The bar’s open-air, strung with lanterns. Humid heat clings to every inch of bare skin. They’re both already sweating from the walk over—Shane in a ribbed tank and swim trunks that keep sliding up his thighs, Ilya in a linen shirt he unbuttoned completely ten minutes ago because it was “stifling, Shane, stifling” and now he’s in loose swim trunks and a shirt so open it might as well not be there. They’re both the object of people’s attention, but that’s probably unavoidable for two pro athletes and one of whom looks like he just rolled off a magazine spread entitled Vacation Heat.
Ilya somehow persuades Shane—begging a little, flirting a little, and a very unsubtle grab at his waist—to agree to shots. So now there’s a bottle of tequila and shot glasses and lime wedges and a small shaker of salt on the table between them, and Shane already knows they’re not getting out of this bar without at least three questionable decisions.

Summary
All his life, Jake Seresin has wanted to live his life as loud as possible.
So that when he dies, people can place flowers on his casket.
When the light hits him, sunbaked and smiling and grinning. He's whole and happy and everything he could ever want. He bites down on his teeth.
Later, he hunches over the porcelain, petals falling out of his mouth, and is already one step in his grave.

Summary
“It’ll be fun,” Marge says to him over the phone as he’s unpacking another box in his tiny, studio apartment. “I’ve been to a few other classes, it’s a good environment.”
“It doesn’t sound like my sort of environment, Marge,” Gale says, picking up an astrophysics textbook that pushes the bounds of what a single-handed grip is capable of. It strains the tendons in his wrist as he tries not to drop it on the way to its new home in the built-in bookshelf. The edges of it are bloated, almost rubbery with how many times it’s been painted over in the same shade of white, a few spots chipped away to show rich brown wood underneath.
“Your sort of environment is on a hill with a telescope, with nobody around.”

Summary
Missing Chris is less of an emotion these days and more of a physical entity. He’s sure everyone can see that he’s slowly hollowing himself out, that he can’t do much of anything else.
But when Jee laughs at him trying to get his tongue to touch his nose, and Mara loops one of her arms through his to keep him from tossing the rest of his cup in the garbage, Eddie feels solid again.
Maybe he likes yellow birthday cake ice cream after all.
(or, gerrard messes with the team's schedules and eddie 'i just drove my son to flee the state' diaz is the only option to watch mara and jee-yun after school on tuesdays, which, shouldn't be a problem at all, right?)
