In 1983, Mike Wheeler stumbles across a girl, nicknames her "El," and changes his life irrevocably as a result.
In 1989, Will Byers stumbles across a boy, nicknames him "Jay," and changes his life irrevocably as a result.Both of these situations were happy accidents. But in the second case, there is also a decidedly more literal happy accident.

Summary
In a world full of mind-possessing creatures and alternate dimensions, the fact that it’s nature that finally gets them is, if nothing else, ironic. Mike and Will are the one constant in a world where nothing ever stays the same. Maybe that’s why the universe never did manage to pull them apart.
Until, of course, the earthquake did.
Alternatively, Mike and Will are trapped at the Palace Arcade after an earthquake strikes Hawkins. They indulge in their last chance to make things right.

Mike hates Valentine’s Day. It was fun as kids, when teachers would make every student decorate a little shoe box with pink and red heart stickers, that by the end of the day would be filled with cheesy Valentines and sweets.
But this isn’t kindergarten anymore— there are no school-enforced rules that his classmates have to give him a Valentine. He has to earn them. And he hasn’t.

Mike is (not) upset that he’s the only one of his friends that hasn’t received a Valentine. That is, until something just so happens to fall out of his locker the next day.
