“Why do you love him, anyway?” Niall asks, casual but curious—the kind of question that sounds harmless until it knocks the wind out of you.
Louis shoots him a look, sharp and startled, but Niall just shrugs and adds air quotes around love.
“What’s not to love?” Louis mutters, voice softer now, like saying it out loud makes it more real. “His laugh, the way he talks with his hands, how he’s always kind even when he doesn’t have to be…”
He trails off, blinking like he’s only just realized how deep he’s in.
Niall watches him, nodding slowly. “Okay,” he says gently. “So what’s stopping you from talking to him?”
Louis doesn’t answer right away. His fingers twitch against the seam of his jeans. He swallows once, hard.
Then, quieter than before, “Because we’re both boys.”
