    He hesitates a moment with his thumb over the lock-button on his phone. Max’s last text is the only thing he can see, so bright and insistent that it feels like it burns at Charles’ corneas. He can’t really explain to himself why he’s hesitating, but some part of him wants to see how far Max is willing to take this. It is the same part of him that didn’t understand breaking when he first started karting, only speed. The same part of him that has always found it almost impossible to back down from a challenge if it comes to Max, that has always wanted to push him back, that has made him never want to be the first one on the breaks when they battle on track.
