Summary
It is the natural law of the world that each person has at least one soulmate. The amount of bonds tied to the soul can be easily determined with how many unique symbols there are in the soulmark everyone was born with.
Just as the sun always rises every morning and the stars twinkle every night, every pair—or group—of soulmates would always have a Dreamer. For even with the unique soulmarks that would hopefully allow soulmates to recognize each other, the vastness of the planet still makes it difficult for them to find one another.
Legends say that it was Gaia’s pity, for she could not bear the thought of soulmates never finding each other. Hence, blessing each bond with a Dreamer who would be able to unite their fated souls together. After awakening in their coming of age, a Dreamer would be able to connect everyone who shares their soul bond through a shared dreamscape. It was because of this blessing, many were able to find their fated ones during their lifetime.

Genesis, Angeal, Sephiroth, and Zack were considered lucky soulmates who have found each other way before shared dreams. But that luck backfires when they could only meet their last soulmate in a space beyond sleep and reality.

They dragged him out of the Vesperpool more dead than alive, dressed in strange clothes. But the seemingly amnesiac boy could fight and looked like a Lucis Caelum. With the Empire tightening its grip on Lucis, he was safer as one of them, a hunter, always on the road. Not that Dave believed for a moment that Tim was related to the King, he didn't have a drop of magic in him. And he couldn't just fight, he could fix their trucks and mad their radios better. Of course they were keeping him!
And of course he'd make friends with the Prince and his retinue. A friendship that helped everyone as the days grew ever shorter.
Tim was just doing his best to survive in such a different world. If he couldn't go home, he'd have to make a new one.
