Summary
There is something about the way Fan Xiao looks at him sometimes: dark, hungry eyes tracking his every move, every minute twitch of his muscle, a starved predator on a prowl – as if Shulang is the only thing that can sate him, the only light reflected in the depth of his eyes – the last matchstick still burning in the palm of his hand, keeping the sharp-toothed darkness at bay. As if he really is his god, brimming with holy might of salvation, capable of pacifying the rushing waves with a casual flick of his fingers – a thing to be devoutly worshipped, held onto with shaking, bloodied hands, kept hidden in the cavity of his chest.
It should unnerve him, perhaps, that morbid, scorching intensity of Fan Xiao's desire, tinged with a hint of nauseating seasickness, but after a lifetime spent wandering through the sea of people like a stray piece of driftwood, unnoticed and unseen, having those ravenous eyes perpetually trained on him feels like his greatest treasure, his hard-earned reward; after all, earth that had turned to permafrost cannot feel the warmth of spring, not unless you set it aflame.

He is addicted to him in the same manner he is addicted to his matches, the minute sting and flicker of the flame, the heady, cloying scent of his cigarettes – like dying, rotten roses. Has been chasing the high of a new dose ever since their first meeting, desperate for another searching look, another sharp-tongued retort, another half-fond half-annoyed sigh, another second spent basking under those watchful eyes, all of You Shulang’s attention belonging to him, and him only. Another taste of his skin, sun-warmed and slightly salty, warmer still in the crook of his neck, blood thrumming underneath, true and alive; another taste of his lips, slightly chapped with the day’s worries, pinpricks of blood rising to the surface with each press of Fan Xiao’s mouth.

Summary
In middle school, there isn’t much more to Saint than the anger bubbling under his skin, like a volcano about to erupt at the slightest provocation. He’s angry at many different things: his father and the empty bottles that stack up in the kitchen’s corners, the rickety food stand and the meager amount of everyday earnings in the money bowl, the debt collectors and the mess they make out of their house, the teachers at their school and their droning voices, his fellow classmates and their too-bright lives.
But through all of the turbulence of Saint’s youth, Shin is right by his side.

“You’re unfair!” Laurent chokes out, wrapping his hands around Damen’s wrist, much like he did last night. “So what, just because I was –admittedly– a little cruel last night you decided to abandon me before the sun even rises? Do you want me to grovel at your feet? Beg for forgiveness?”
“I want no such thing,” Damen answers patiently. “You said yourself before we arrived here that our stay was going to last six months at most. We’re almost halfway done. Without me here to distract you, the time will fly and before you know it, we will reunite in our new palace.”
Laurent’s lower lip wobbles. “You’re willing to stay away from me for that long, then?”
Damen doesn’t hesitate to answer honestly. “If it will make you stop resenting me, yes.”
