Summary
Horror always knew that something had gone wrong when there was a moment of complete silence at the castle.
It wasn’t natural.
Dust was always meant to be heard mumbling as he paced back and forth in the long and dark corridors, picking fights with whoever he came across. Killer tended to be pretty silent, but, usually, he could still be found hidden in the darkest shadows, observing the others move about, and, if he was feeling generous, dishing out some life advice in the form of violence. Lastly, the clanking of Cross’ sword against the endless stream of mannequins they had in the gym was a constant that was hard to miss. The ex-guardsman was not the quiet type.
Their world only ever stilled when Nightmare’s presence encroached on what little peace they’d managed to carve out for themselves. The King didn’t leave his study on most days. Truthfully, Horror had only seen him a handful of times outside of missions in the ten years he’d lived there. And each and every time someone had gotten hurt. Usually Killer. And then that horrible quiet stillness would settle over them.

Dust's first thought upon meeting Cross for the very first time was that he wouldn’t make it a week in there. And then he halved the time in his mind when Nightmare assigned Killer to show him the ropes and explain all the rules. It was always a coin toss whether the Boss’ right-hand man would be in the mood to be helpful or not. Sometimes he just wanted to see the world burn for no reason other than to satiate his endless boredom and there was nothing anybody could do about it. Not even their Leader could reign him in when he craved chaos (although that was mainly because he usually didn’t notice, too busy obsessing over his power and what his dear twin was doing to pay attention to anything else).
The observation wasn’t accompanied by any emotions.
If the new guy died at record speed it wasn’t his concern. Dust hadn’t made it so far by knocking down the many walls he’d erected in his mind at the first sign of something new.
