“Do you miss Pierre?” Charles asks suddenly, a bar of chocolate halfway to his mouth.
It catches Este off guard. He’s tried not to think about it, really, scared of that jealousy he felt over the winter. It was an ugly feeling, best avoided. But he does. He misses Pierre something rotten. Charles is a whirlwind, fast and loud and always spinning Este in circles, while Pierre is a rock, never saying as much but those words mean far more. There is a comfort in wise silence, in warm beds and shared drinks and just barely catching the front wheel. “Of course I do.”
“Me too.”

Summary
It's like he wakes up in increments. First, the sound of the machines, again, droning on and on. Then voices, hushed but urgent. Then the pain, an insistent throb in his calf, his collarbone, his wrists. Finally, he opens his eyes and he sees that he is lying in a hospital bed.
He remembers next to nothing. Well, he remembers some things, some very random facts and a few important things from his childhood- like his family's faces, who they are (thank fuck he remembers that). He knows most general knowledge, like NFL rules and how to cook spaghetti and how to park a car, but has no memory attached to these facts. He knows all the Formula 1 world champions from when he was three to around age twelve. (Schumacher for five years in a row, Fernando Alonso twice, then Raikkonen, Hamilton, Button. Still got it.) But other than that- not much.
Lance wakes up from a crash and forgets.

Dick’s cheek smashed against the sharp gravel, Slade’s body pinning him to the ground. “That was hardly a fight at all, kid,” Slade murmured in his ear before he pulled off of Dick, replacing his body weight by slamming his knee on the small of Dick’s spine and keeping it there. “I’m disappointed, honestly. You trying to lose?”
Dick’s fingers spasmed and curled into the gravel in silence, and then, slowly, Slade shifted. Removed his knee. Slade gave a rough, startled laugh as he made the realization, and Dick heard him sit back, then stand.
“You were,” Slade murmured, sounding almost delighted. Or — at least, as close as a man like that could get.
Dick rolled over and pulled himself up, brushing the debris from his face and his clothes, heart jackhammering as he stared Slade in the eye. Dick swallowed hard.
“I have a deal for you.”
Slade huffed, like that was quaint, the corner of his lip upturning. “...A deal?”
“A deal," Dick said quietly. "One year."

There's a rumble inside Genma’s chest — a shuddered giggle — and his eyes slant towards the only one Kakashi has open. “That's what you’re thinking about right now?”
“Yeah,” he admits through the fog of his own brain.
“Well,” he says, hiking Kakashi tighter into his hold. “I’m saving your sorry ass. I'm pretty sure that counts.”

He’s said he would stop before, and sometimes, it’s even lasted a while. But Bruce breaks all of his promises, sans one, and Dick is just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

"Why did my parents leave me to you?" Bruce asks, with enough childlike genuinity and confusion that Alfred can't even be offended by the slightly backhanded accusation.
In a way, he can agree with the boy's disbelief. Why had Thomas and Martha Wayne left their darling son to a man who they barely knew in any emotional capacity? Serving them lunch and organising their linen closet is hardly a reason to write him into their wills.
Staring down at Bruce, the butler desperately tries to work out how to explain to an eight year old that his parents might have been insane.
But maybe, the insane one is him.
