They put us through hell, no more than just hell. Most of us died or were crippled, couldn’t handle the augmentations. When the Covenant attacked our mission directive changed, we became the bulwark of humanity.
We were hailed as heroes, the greatest legends. Demigods. Our presence alone bolstered morale. Those were labels I just couldn't accept, not for what they cost.
I had to see them die so many times it shattered my soul.
I would do anything to keep them alive. To protect my family I’d give my life as many times as it takes.
It's a Spartan's duty, my duty.
