Mizi fumbles for her glasses. Sua is still a fuzzy blob of white-black-violet, and Mizi needs to be sure she’s real. Sua presses them into her hand, and as Mizi puts them on she snaps into sharp relief, blushing, hair mussed and haloed with the glow of fluorescent lights.
The next time she sees Sua like that, smiling and breathless and ethereal and the focus of the world, it’s on stage with a bullet in her neck. She hits the ground, porcelain and still.

They were half way through the second bottle by now, and their shoulders were touching. She could feel the hard line of Jaskier’s thigh against hers. She was very aware of the chest hair visible at the open neck of his shirt, and how he could probably see down her dress from here. She hadn’t moved to put any distance between them and neither had he.
“Why are we still talking about him? I don’t care about Geralt of Rivia any more,” lied Yennefer.
“Nor do I,” Jaskier lied back.

The very first time Peter kissed Juno Steel was right here in this apartment, before Juno even knew his name. Juno had brought him back here, just like today; given him a drink, just like today. Nothing has really changed, despite everything they have been through together. If he kisses Juno now, if he allows himself to spend another night with Juno without resolving anything about the last time, then the risk is there that sooner or later they’ll just end up right back where they started.

The Martian sun glares down from overhead. Juno has tied his coat around his waist. Hettie hops along at his feet. Great clouds of sand roll over the dunes, faster as the wind picks up. Juno wonders whether Pereyra and the Piranha’s bodies will have been buried yet.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” he asks at last.
Hettie waggles their head to dislodge some of the sand. “You know. What kind of animal would you have picked? For me to settle as.”
