Summary
When Phoenix and Miles were nine years old, they—along with Larry, of course—came up with a secret code that they could use to talk to each other. No one else knew it, and Miles was pretty sure that at some point, Larry had eaten the key.
Twenty-five years later, and Miles was still using that code to send secret messages to Phoenix. All his documents, all his notes, everything he sent to him had some sort of hidden meaning.
The only question was, would Phoenix ever notice?

Summary
Everyone knew about the Witch of the Woods. He was ethereal and beautiful, and, as rumor had it, all but immortal. If there was ever a hand as sought-after as his, it was certainly nowhere to be found in any of the neighboring villages. There was hardly a day that went by where the witch didn’t receive one proposal or another. Honestly, he was getting rather sick of it, especially since he had seen all that the townspeople had to offer, with none of it being particularly impressive.
And so, the witch devised a plan. For only the hottest month of each year, he would tie a key around the neck of a cat. If anyone managed to bring him that key before the month was out, the witch would declare, he would become their betrothed. But if no suitors managed to bring him the key, they would have to wait until the following year. Finally, the witch would know some peace. The proposals would cease, and the witch could continue to live his peaceful, unmarried life.
Because really, he knew none of them would be able to retrieve the key anyways.

"Try not to get upset, Nick," Maya said, laughing in that nervous, teetering sort of way that told Phoenix he should be upset about this. Had she done something to his hair again?
"Maya…" Phoenix said warningly. Or at least, he tried to. All he heard, though, was a dog's bark. Medium-sized, if he had to guess, maybe bigger. Either way, it was not a good sign. "Maya I swear—"
"Uh, you said you like dogs, right?"

Miles almost didn’t hear the trill of his phone over the booming fireworks. He definitely would have missed it if he hadn’t been holding the device. But whoever was calling, they couldn’t have anything to do with the holiday. They weren’t saved in his phone, after all. He picked up the call.
“Sir! You gotta come down here! Mr. Wright’s in the hospital!”
