Summary
The irony that the lethal marksman’s final shot had missed its mark – failing to kill – was not lost on Sugimoto. In a different way, Ogata had lost a great deal more than if he’d succeeded in what he set out to accomplish. Now, he was blind and broken seemingly beyond repair, leaving Sugimoto to wonder if Asirpa’s decision to pick him off the tracks hadn’t been the crueler of the two options.

Summary
Ogata isn’t fooled. Not the way the rest of them are.
They look at her and they think she’s a child. An Ainu hunter, yes — strangely competent for her age and mature beyond her years. But still: a child of barely a decade, young and untested.
He holds no such delusions.
He sees things as they are, not as how others might take them to mean. He sees Asirpa and her bright blue eyes, blood staining her lips when she slices herself a cut of raw meat from a fresh kill, and he thinks: wolf.

Summary
Asirpa wouldn’t know unless she was looking at him. That’s how Sugimoto operates, Ogata has learned. He shields her from the reality of things far too often, and Asirpa is complicit in it. She wants to be shielded, although from what or as to why, Ogata isn’t sure yet. But he will learn.
“My mom taught me while she was down,” Sugimoto says, and that’s that.
That’s why she could never reach her full potential.
But Ogata can teach her.
