"The song rises. A ballad. Same as the one that Zephyr played for him many years ago (he’d requested it, in jest, to be played again at his funeral). He still remembers her phrasings, her technique, the strings she left open, the notes she deemed important.

He stops outside the tavern. He dares not look in. Hope is just the precursor to disappointment. And he knows disappointment. He’s woken from so many dreams of her (yes, they’re just dreams now, not nightmares). He’s scared to hope.
Scared of more hurt.
Then fear turns to anger. For over a hundred years, he’s been tortured by not having an answer to his question. She owes him closure. She owes him, he thinks, recalling the words from her letter, the first she ever wrote him, as a soft breeze swirls past him.

Summary
She was never supposed to know he loves them. Daniel had been hiding how easy it is for him to fall in love for years. No one was ever supposed to find out that his stupid heart was too big, too easy to grab hold of. Hell all you have to do is prove you can handle being around him, prove he can rely on you, and that’s it, boom, he’s smitten. Like some neglected animal being shown the faintest bit of affection and latching onto it to convince itself that life is still worth living.

This was it. The final, insurmountable obstacle. The last, bright, loud, suffocating straw.
The exhaustion, which had been a dull roar, suddenly became a shrieking, white-hot siren. The overwhelming sensation of the past hour, the physical demand of standing upright, the itch of his clothing and the light in his eyes- it all compounded and exploded in his head at once.
The immediate, new stimulation was a physical assault.
AKA- Danny is overworked, overtired, and overstimulated. Practically the ingredients for a meltdown.
