Summary
It’s not like Kukui’s in bad health, it’s just that he's getting older. And for some reason that scares the hell out of Ash. The Masked Royal has been Ash’s hero for as long as he can remember. Him retiring is one thing, the devastating thought that one day Kukui won’t be there to catch him when he falls is another. It makes tears well up in his eyes, but he pushes them down.
He looks at the older man next to him, really looks at him. His hairs started to grey slightly, and there's lines on his face that haven’t always been there. His eyes are slightly more sunken, and his bun isn’t as neat as it used to be.
But that same warmth is still there. The softness of his gaze, a welcoming smile, they all remain. The thought that someday in the future, that warmth will no longer be there makes Ash’s chest feel tight.
Or:
Kukui's retiring as the Masked Royal, and Ash doesn't know how to feel about that.

“Oi,” he calls instead, his voice loud in the still night, making him wince. “Marimo?”
There’s no response, and Sanji shakes his head. Reluctantly, he reaches out to prod at Zoro’s leg, his fingers dipping in amongst the rumbled fabric of his pants until he finds the hard muscle of his thigh.
“Marimo,” he tries again, jabbing at Zoro a little rougher. “Marimo.”
Zoro lets out a chest rumbling snore in response.
Or, after suffering from a nightmare, Sanji finds solace in Zoro's, albeit unassuming, arms.

“I am.” Zoro seems too hesitate for a moment, as if deciding his words carefully. “I heard movement and came down to see what it was.”
Sanji raises an eyebrow, lifting up the blanket that is definitely the one they keep up in the crows nest, the familiar bright red of its wool dulled in the dark. “So this is meant to be a weapon then?”

Zoro catches his hand though, his gaze softening, and Nami’s own widen in surprise as Sanji goes still.
