    "Alex clasps Kara's forearms. She's earnest and insistent, love and sorrow and pride in her eyes. She smiles, eyes starting to glisten. The smoke billows around them, embers floating by, Alex's curls teased by the drafts.

    She pulls Kara in for a hug, whispering something in her ear, but Kara can’t make it out. Alex takes a step away, hands sliding down to grasp Kara’s.

    Kara watches Alex walk backwards several steps, then turn and run toward the helicopter."
