Summary
“Shiv and I were going to take a yacht out to some French island or another,” Tom says, waving his hand as though the island itself were arbitrary, something so unimportant that it could be decided by the throw of a dart. The breeze hits his face like a gentle spritz of cologne, the air smelling of salt and sea. Despite the nature of the conversation, brought about by digging into the burial site of his broken engagement with Shiv, and exacerbated by being asked to excavate the remains of that relationship’s grave for Greg’s enjoyment, Tom was finding the experience more cathartic than he would have thought he would have.
“We could go in the opposite direction,” Greg offers, looking hopeful. He opens his mouth to undoubtedly continue with his train of thought, but Tom is not so kind as to allow that.
“I already have,” says Tom while bouncing his sunglasses jauntily off the bridge of his nose and back onto it, “by marrying you.”

“I have one.”
“Uh huh.”
“He has…” Oh god, Greg’s voice was already shaking. He was sweating, too. He took Tom’s hand in his and began to trace around the fingers with his own. “The most beautiful blue eyes in New York.”
“Ha, yeah?”
Greg nodded and turned Tom’s hand over, eyes refusing to lift and see the face he adored so dearly. “And he’s pretty rich, like—I’m doing pretty well for myself, but this guy’s loaded.”
Tom laughed.
“But he’s sweet and he’s really kind a lot of the time and when he’s not we get through it. He appreciates me.” He brought Tom’s palm to his lips, kissed it. “He values me.”

“I’m not gay,” Tom says suddenly, determined, eyes wide, and Greg just blinks at him, one eyebrow cautiously raising.
“What?”
“I’m not. I’m not gay, Greg. You fucking idiot, do you hear me? Did you hear what I fucking said?”
Greg looks a little pained, but nods anyway, “O-okay. Sure. Okay, Tom.”
There’s a long pause and something clears a little in Tom’s head as the mist recedes. He feels something wash over him; a curiosity he’d never dared hope for because it would be far too revealing.

OR: Tom grapples with complex and confusing emotions following a lifetime of repressing who he truly is.
