    Summary

Then Rozanov turns, his side profile on full display, and Shane can see now that it’s not his phone he’s cradling in his hands but an unlit cigarette and a flickering lighter.

Shane is suddenly unsure of his next move. If he announces himself, he can perhaps get this introduction over with before the stick ever gets lit. And then, of course, there’s always the option of turning around completely, heading back inside like he was never even here. But when else will he get the chance to meet Rozanov alone, privately, without a crowd of hungry journalists eager to hear their first exchange and weigh in on their microexpressions and tones and the unspoken messages in their words?

What he absolutely cannot do is be within three metres of Ilya Rozanov smoking a cigarette because there are some embarrassments you never come back from, and suffering a spontaneous nosebleed while introducing himself to the Russian opponent he’s never met before is unequivocally one of them.

    Or:

Shane Hollander has a strange affliction: cigarette smoke gives him nosebleeds. Needless to say, this makes interacting with Ilya Rozanov more difficult than he'd previously imagined.

    Summary

Shane is conscious for the entire crash. That doesn’t mean he remembers it.

The brain has a funny way of blocking out trauma like this, of shielding the body from things that would hurt it to remember. But Shane’s ears are still ringing with the sounds of metal crunching and tires screeching, even if there’s a large blank space in his head where the memory should be. The crash was a blur, a blink. Terribly long and then suddenly over, a heavy silence now descending over the eerie stillness.

    Or:

A week after returning from their honeymoon, Shane gets in a car accident that threatens the future he and Ilya so painstakingly fought to build.

    Summary

Ilya Rozanov hoped he would be a neutral, a disappointment to his father.
"A Level 10 dominant. Even higher than me. Ilya, you are destined for great positions, great things."
But instead, Ilya had breathed through the heat, the pain and directly stared at his father with a fury unmatched for a 13 year old –when he spoke, he held no emotion in his voice, or face.
“I want to skate and play hockey. I am going to practice, father."

Two weeks into the age of 17, Shane Hollander had woken up with his entire body burning, every muscle in his body cramping in pain until his mother had sensed it, and rushed to him.
“No, no. No. No.” He crawled to his knees on the bed, his entire body spasming. “No!” He yelled. “Mom, get me to a doctor. Today. I’m going on blockers. I have ice in three hours, then I have to go to school, and I have high impact training at 6. I cannot.”
Yuna had cupped her son’s cheek, completely calm and stoic in his panic and anxiety.
“Mom, I have hockey!” He yelled in panic, and in pain as he groaned in pain, his muscles rebelling.
“...Level 10.” He repeated, just to make sure his brain wasn’t fucking him over. “A level 10, submissive.”

    Summary

“I think we need a plan.”

“I thought we have a plan?” Ilya asked, gruffly, his brow furrowing in confusion.

“I just mean…” Shane’s face was serious; his eyes were doing that puppy-dog thing that Ilya couldn’t resist, where they looked earnest and soft and serious all at once. "What if we didn’t wait to come out? Rather than waiting until we retire. Maybe, I don’t know, stopped hiding quite so much and just… let people figure it out, eventually.”

Changing the Narrative, or; Hollander and Rozanov's Guide to a Gentle Take-Off

Shane and Ilya are done hiding. Coming out, however, is another story. Between family, friends, fans, teammates, and a league still grappling with inclusivity, changing the narrative might just prove more complicated than they expected.

    Summary

The tiny, sober part of his mind is telling him to drop it. The stakes are too high just to prove a point to a bunch of dumb assholes. But they presented him with a challenge—one with pretty freckles and even prettier eyes.

And Ilya Rozanov never backs down from a challenge, not when he knows he’ll win.
