Well, life isn't content to leave them be, so it rocks them once more in the direction of one another.
And as is the way of all good fairytale stories, it begins with Iruka finding a warrior bleeding out in the woods.

Summary
Iruka was fond of tiny fish that clambered by the edge of pools. He’d considered himself a very unique little boy to have been allowed to gaze upon their gatherings from above their watery homes. To them, he must have looked like a terrifying giant, and yet their kindness outweighed even their most innate survival instincts to let Iruka carry them around in a tiny plastic barrel with nothing but the meager hope that he would bring them back.

At 19, he understood what it meant to be a field ninja and he realized in tandem that he could never teach himself to wash blood out of the clothes he was always told his parents were proud to wear.
At 20, he understood what it meant to be a teacher and he learned that no amount of re-reading could change how abysmally low the rate of survival for genin who didn’t retain everything they had been taught.
At 21, he met Naruto Uzumaki.
At 21… Iruka Umino finally understood why his parents could throw away everything so easily. He understood, because he was looking at Naruto clutching his stomach hungrily as bruises littered whatever his baggy clothes didn’t. Grabby hands beckoning for his help even in fitful sleep the way a baby would beg for it’s mother’s comfort, whimpers that quieted themselves like a child who no longer believed they’d be heard by anyone helpful.

A Foundation Member, named Nagito Komaeda, comes up to him with a proposition: Come work at Jabberwock Island and get a taste of freedom, or stay in hospice.
In the end, it's a bit of a no-brainer.
Kokichi just wishes he could get this itching in his leg to stop.
