after a hunt gone wrong, arthur and merlin find themselves stranded in some of the more unfavorable parts of essetir. disguising arthur as a commoner, merlin and arthur have to lay low and find their way back to camelot without cenred knowing they’re in his kingdom.
only weeks after arthur stumbled upon merlin’s magic, things are tense between the two, despite the danger they’re in. arthur, struggling to align what he’s been taught about magic with who merlin is, can do the only thing he knows to do: close himself off.
though after a strange encounter he witnesses between merlin and the tavern owner that hides them from cenred’s men, arthur is unable to keep his questions to himself any longer. the answers he gets rewrite everything he has ever known about magic, and about those who live with it.

Merlin let out a high pitched and bird-like noise in response.

Summary
Merlin has access to everything relating to the Prince, including the keys to Arthur’s coffer. And why shouldn’t he? If there’s one thing Arthur is certain of, it’s that Merlin can be trusted completely. Then, one afternoon, Arthur walks in on Merlin about to steal money from his strongbox. The incident leaves Arthur with one burning question: Why, after two years of loyal service, would Merlin (almost) turn into a thief?

The words seemed to lose their meaning the more Arthur tried to make sense of them, bleeding in and through each other like ink dissolving in water. The only fact he knew to be true – absolutely, permanently, irrevocably true – was that Merlin was dead.

Summary
Eventually, Arthur had enough. “Come on, Merlin. Whatever it is must be important, and you’re clearly -” Arthur waved his hand impatiently in Merlin’s general direction, “- trying to find the right moment. Well, this is me telling you, this is the right moment. Go ahead.”
Merlin looked to the side. “You’re mistaken, Sire.” Then, half a beat too late for their usual bickering, he added: “As usual.”
“See, Merlin, I don’t think I am.” Arthur leaned back in his chair. “The only question is what it could be, that makes you want to tell me but not want to tell me at the same time.”

In which Merlin obviously has a secret, and recently crowned King Arthur figures the wrong things out. At least initially. Then, he starts getting frighteningly close to something he, in the end, isn’t sure he wants to know about.
