Retelling of the fairytale ‘Hans who made the princess laugh’
Prince Arthur has been saddened so deeply by the passing of his daughter, Princess Faroe, that the kingdom has been shrouded by cloud and melancholy every hour since her passing. The townspeople regularly gather beneath the towers of the castle, trying to get Arthur’s attention and trying to cheer him up, but nothing works, and their attempts only succeed in making him sadder. John Doe, a baker from the edge of the town might be the only one who can make Prince Arthur laugh again.

Summary
John Lester. Arthur thought about him carrying that name around everywhere he went and grit his teeth like he was chewing sand. It was his own damned fault for telling John to pick whatever he wanted; he’d had plenty of opportunity to lay down ground rules, it wasn’t John’s fault Arthur had run out of other Lesters quite some time ago with no plans to bolster numbers.
Not that he’d been much more enthused to gift his name to Bella. Why couldn’t he seem to stop comparing the scrap of the King in Yellow he’d stolen to his dead wife?
(In which John and Arthur take up private investigating together once they find their way out of the Dreamlands and into separate bodies.)

“So, what is it that you’re looking for that you feel like friends can't give you?” is what Herm gets after he's done with a 15-minute monologue on how he can't be friends with Robert. He sits there and gapes. An answer comes to mind, perfectly formed as a well-rehearsed graduation speech or a baby about to be born. If he were to say it, he’d self-combust on the spot, but that isn't his area of expertise; that would be something more akin to what happens when a lump of cotton candy is thrown into a tub.
Herm goes to work, goes to therapy, and goes to (not so) great lengths to get over his workplace crush.
