“Can I tell you something?”
Slider didn’t move, didn’t look over his shoulder or turn around to face Tom, he kept his eyes glued over the railing at the house across the street, or maybe at the bottom of their driveway on the mailbox.
Tom’s body jumped just the smallest bit, his body's instinctive reaction to that spring sweet silence being broken.
His body straightened up just the smallest bit more.
“Yeah, what’s up?” Tom asked, bringing the bottle begrudgingly to his lips once more.Slider stood silent, seemingly frozen in time. He must’ve been waiting, waiting until the fruity drink began to slip down his throat so he’d get the satisfaction of listening to Tom choke. He sighed softly, almost hesitant to say it before he let the ball drop.
“I think I got a girl pregnant.”

If Javy squints he can almost see the noose around Jake’s neck.
It’s been there for a while. Sometimes tightening, sometimes loosening. But, present.
It’s dangerous.
It makes Jake dangerous.
Javy knows everyone thinks that's just the way he is no matter what. But Javy knows better. Knows that there was a before, a now, and eventually there’s gonna be an after.
Hangman’s reputation precedes him. Everywhere he goes, people expect something from Jake and he loves to give them what they want. But, if he keeps going on like this, there isn’t going to be a Jake left.
