“This is going to break these damn extras.” Izuku sighed, but before he could start his argument, Katsuki went on. “They will never be able to go back to their regular innocent lives, we are going to devastate them, Izuku.”
“I know!” He tried hard not to shout, but the words just forced their way out. “I know.” He repeated, calmer. “But we have to do this. We have to. They have spent their whole lives cushioned and coddled by the good side of quirk society.”
Katsuki’s jaw was so tight, Izuku swore his teeth must be aching from the force of it. When he spoke, he did so through his teeth with pain clear on his features.
“You get it, don’t you; what you’re asking me to do? Izuku I-...you’re asking me to hurt you again. You’re asking me to be your abuser, again.”

OR: My take on 'Compassion Week' - where the hero students have to do presentations on why a villain might become a villain. Izuku and Katsuki decide to pick Quirklessness, and their presentation is...enlightening.

Summary
The Sludge Villain doesn't find Bakugo after escaping All Might, but some other random civilian. There's no series of explosions to draw All Might to the scene of the second attack. It's by pure luck that Izuku stumbles upon them. And Izuku does what he always has when he sees one person hurting another: inserts himself between the aggressor and victim. He finds this is significantly harder to do when one of the parties is a sentient slime.

Summary
Midoriya Izuku is terrible at tying his tie. He knows this. His mother knows this. All Might knows this. Honestly, the whole of Japan knows this.
So really, they couldn't have made the connection sooner.
It takes a headband, a black-tie Gala and a school dance to figure out why every villain is so damn intimidated by him in a suit.

In one universe, the fight with Overhaul leads to multiple tragedies, including the loss of a Quirk and the life of a hero.
In this universe, Izuku got to the fight just a few minutes quicker, and moved without thinking.
And got shot by a Quirk-erasing bullet.
Things don't go as they should.OR: An odd crack and angst ramble of a one-shot in which I sat down and went, 'Would Deku actually lose One for All, since he doesn't have a Quirk Factor?' And decided the answer was no.
