Summary
Maddie’s eyebrows rise, and she looks past Buck to Eddie, the corners of her mouth curling upwards. “My kisses don’t work on Uncle Eddie,” she says, and if she thinks Buck misses the way she says it—Uncle Eddie—she’s sorely mistaken. He knows exactly what she’s doing.
And he realizes too late that that means he should probably be afraid.
Jee gasps, eyes going wide. “What?” She asks breathlessly. “Then how will his ouchies get better?”
Maddie hums thoughtfully—performatively—before her eyes slowly slide over to Buck. He starts to shake his head, unsure exactly what she’s about to do but deeply aware that he’s not going to like it. “I have heard,” she says, leaning into her like she has a secret, “That best friend kisses are just as good as mommy kisses.” She tosses her hair over her shoulder and looks at Chimney. “And almost as strong as daddy kisses, too.”

Summary
“Why are you the way you are?” he asks and Buck freezes in his movements. Eddie sounds serious — like he’s genuinely upset. With Buck?
“What, um,” Buck tries, clearing his throat awkwardly, a sinking feeling growing in his gut. “What do you mean?”
“‘s fucking annoying,” Eddie slurs, rolling his eyes again and leaning back to look at the ceiling as if it’s something interesting. “”’nd exhausting.”
Buck’s heart drops, remembering Eddie’s words in the grocery store all those years ago. Eddie just yawns and closes his eyes with a sigh.
“D’you know how exhausting it is to be around you?”

“Eddie doesn't hate you,” Buck says quietly. “Why would you think he hates you?”
Tommy corners the kitchen island, standing in nearly the same spot where they kissed that first time. Buck realizes then that the memory doesn't stir butterflies in his stomach any longer. Huh.
“Because, Evan,” — and it sounds nothing like Eddie, the words laced with anger instead of profoundness, spoken bitterly instead of affectionately. “I have the one thing he wants to have all to himself.”
“What?”
“You.”

“Eddie, come on, then we can make a regular schedule for practising! Just set the timer, kiss for 10 seconds, and move on. It makes sense, right? The more we do it, the more comfortable we’ll be.”
Eddie held his hands up, admitting defeat. He pulled his phone out of his pocket and clicked on the clock app, setting up a timer for 10 seconds.
“Alright, Buckley—“ He held up the phone to show Buck the timer. “—whenever you’re ready. Try not to go all Statue of Liberty on me this time.”

Summary
“How do you like to be kissed?”
Despite the situation they are in, that is the last thing Buck expected Eddie to say. He briefly wonders if he already got that concussion and is hallucinating this whole exchange.
Because Eddie sounds serious. There are no traces of teasing or amusement in his voice. Just softness and consideration.
As if this would be something he truly wants to know. As if it is information he requires before kissing him.
Buck’s heart clenches because this is information that goes to a whole other level of intimacy, something that they don’t actually know about each other.

Eddie rolled his eyes. “So because one woman left you, you’ve decided you’re better off alone forever.”
Buck pouted. “I’m not being that dramatic.”
“Yes, you are.”
“It’s just a lot, okay?” Buck gestured frustratedly. "I don’t want the shallow hookups I had before, and I know a real relationship can take time. I just — I — I don’t know if I’m ready for all of that.”
“So it’s the peacocking that you hate.”
“Something like that.”
There was a pause as Eddie seemed to hesitate for a second. Then, “Go on a date with me, then.”

Summary
Jee thrusts the card out towards Eddie. “For you,” she says, cheeks dimpling as her smile turns shy.
It reminds Eddie so much of Christopher, when he was this age. So sweet, so earnest. His heart squeezes in his chest as he accepts Jee’s card.
And— it is just about the cutest fucking thing Eddie’s ever seen, honestly.
The card, clearly handmade, is shaped like a bumblebee. A yellow teardrop body, striped with crooked lines of black marker. Its head is shaped like a heart, with two pipe cleaner antennae sticking out, and this teeny tiny u-shaped smile and a pair of googly eyes glued to make up its face. The kicker, though, are the wings — two big, slightly misshapen pink hearts (clearly cut out by Jee-Yun herself) protruding from either side, each with a little message scribbled out in Jee’s loopy handwriting. The one on the left reads “BEE mine” and a grin breaks out across Eddie’s face, an amused chuckle slipping past his lips. The one on the right, though — it brings an embarrassing lump to Eddie’s throat as he reads, “Happy Valentine’s Day Uncle Eddie!”
Uncle Eddie.

Summary
"It's fine, Jee," Eddie says. "Buck doesn't have to kiss me."
"Yes he does." Jee crosses her arms and looks sternly at Buck. "Daddy and Mommy kiss every time when they go away from each other."
"Yeah, okay." Buck sucks in a breath and steps towards Eddie. He ducks his head down and presses the most fleeting kiss to Eddie's cheek.
"Not like that," Jee scolds.
"What? Why not?" Buck squawks.
"Because," she sighs and gives him a long, disapproving look. "Mommy and Daddy always kiss on the lips."

Summary
Thinking of strong arms embracing him from behind. Amber eyes and a soft strand of hair falling over a forehead. A scar on the bottom lip and a tattoo wrapped around a forearm—Buck blows on the eyelash. It flies away in the wind.
Finally, he tears his eyes away from it. His stare meets Eddie’s again, whose grin still hasn’t diminished.
Buck stutters out, “Sorry,” and takes a small step away from him. Eddie still doesn’t budge.
“No, it's—” Eddie’s fingers brush over where Buck’s once were on his face. “Uh, what does it mean?”
“Hmm?”
“The eyelash. It must mean something,” Eddie says. “Apparently, everything has a hidden meaning now. Tell me about it.” His tone is soft, and Buck melts like putty in his hands.

"So," Buck says, sliding onto the seat next to Eddie while the auction winds down around them. "Mystery bidder. That's exciting."
Eddie takes a very deliberate sip of water. "Yep."
"You know who it was?"
"Nope."
"You don't even seem curious," Buck tries.
"Not really."
"Someone spent over two grand on you, Eddie. On a date with you. Like a date-date. With food and conversation. And you're just— what, chill about it?"
Eddie shrugs. The picture of nonchalance. "It's for charity."
"It's for— okay." Buck gapes. He’s got nothing. He’s standing at the door and Eddie has deadbolted it from the inside. "Cool. Great."
It is not cool. It is not great. Buck is aware that his definition of cool and great has always been somewhat flexible, but this doesn't qualify under any interpretation.

Summary
Eddie narrows his eyes at her suspiciously as she continues to sit there in amicable silence, seemingly conducting some sort of psychological warfare on him.
“Why did you bid on me?” he blurts.
“We never get to hang out one-on-one,” Maddie answers with a shrug. “And you’re very important to a lot of people who are very important to me. So I figured it was about time we did.”
“You spent sixteen hundred dollars,” Eddie reminds her.
Maddie shrugs again. “I was feeling charitable.”
OR: Deciding it's finally time to interfere, Maddie uses the LAFD's Bachelor Auction to win herself some one-on-one time with Eddie.

Summary
As though they’re drawn by an external force, Eddie’s eyes once again scan the room for Buck, and their gazes meet just in time for Eddie to catch his wink. There is a flutter in Eddie’s chest at that, and even that is familiar. He tries not to think about it, but the feeling, much like Buck, is stubborn and impossible to ignore.
He clears his throat and looks back at the lawyer, straightening up in the uncomfortable seat to the right of the judge.
“I had to be better for my son. I couldn’t let him grow up like I did," he adds at last, and the lawyer’s head tilts in clear interest at the opportunity to pry further.
“Would you say that the circumstances of your childhood led to these issues in your adulthood?” the man prompts.

“Sorry just paying for…”
“Table 12! I remember,” she injects brightly whilst ringing him up.
Eddie only winces slightly at the final count of the bill as he reaches into his wallet for his card.
“You have a gorgeous family.”
Eddie feels his face split into a wide grin. “Thank you.”
“How long have you and your husband been together?”
The words rattle around in Eddie’s head for a moment as he stammers like a fool, mid-swipe of his card. “I—Uh, seven…seven years.”
The waitress smiles brightly. “That’s so sweet, have a great rest of your day, sir.”
“Uh, yeah. Thanks.” Eddie places a fiver in the tip jar and spins right on his heels, leaving the cafe in a rush.

He's going back to the aquarium.
Not for Buck. Obviously, categorically, definitively not for Buck.
For Christopher, who loved it.
For a new sticker, because the old one is gone and he needs a replacement the way you'd replace a toothbrush or a phone charger, because it's a functional object that serves a functional purpose in his life.
If Buck happens to be there, then fine, great. Eddie can say hi, because there's nothing weird about wanting to see someone again. People revisit people. That's a normal thing to do. It doesn't have to mean anything. Besides, Chris loved Buck, so really, he only hopes Buck is there so Chris can see him again.
