Summary
Soulmates were not uncommon in this day and age; people knew about them and expected them. They could even long for them, since a vast majority of them met soon into their teens or early adult life. The way they knew who was their soulmate could vary: first words they would say to you branded somewhere on your body, only seeing in black and white until you touched each other, hearing the song they were singing in your head, etc. It was easier for some to find their other halves when it was a physical mark, but even then, it could be tricky for both parties to understand they were soulmates.
Take Merlin, for example.
Merlin knew whose Song was written on his skin.Doesn’t mean it didn’t break his heart knowing the person it belonged to would never hear it.

He could have sworn he hadn't offerended any and all form of higher being, nor any vengeful spirit, so imagine his surprise when he suddenly came face to face with the person who was the last one he wanted to see. Not out of anger, nothing of that sort. It's just that things hadn't ended well since they've last seen each other. Trust him it was ugly, horrendous even.
For the past elven or so years Izuku did not once think he'll be seeing his childhood friend again. When you take into consideration what happened back in their last day in middle school, where everything was left on a sour note, anyone within earshot back then would come to one conclusion that what semblance of friendship left between the two was burnt to dust. Izuku didn't hope that he'll see Kacchan again, and even if they did it sure as hell ain't going to be pretty. So as someone who hates confrontation until the last minute of course his reaction was incredibly 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦...
He turned the other direction and booked it, you know like a fucking coward that he was.
