Mike noticed the first gold star because it didn’t belong.
It sat on the corner of a case file like it had wandered there by accident, bright and obnoxiously cheerful against a sea of black text and yellow legal pad scribbles. For a second he thought it was some leftover from the mailroom, maybe something stuck to Harvey’s folder before it made its way upstairs. He turned the file slightly, expecting it to fall off.
It didn’t.

“I thought you needed to see those,” Louis says concisely.
Harvey takes one of the photos from the stack to take a closer look, and… no. His heart sinks deep in his chest. At first, his brain refuses to cooperate. It catalogs details instead — bad lighting, grainy resolution, a shitty angle. A man whose face he knows far too well.
In the photo, Mike is in his old apartment in Brooklyn, where his pathetic junkie of an ex now lives. Sure as hell, this is not where Mike was supposed to be when he left for the business dinner.
