its the 1910's. athena and bobby are married. due to athena being black and bobby being white, they wern't widly accepted. they have a son, Buckley, aged 8, who is mixed race and has vigilito.
they are on a large boat, travelling from the UK to the USA for work and a new life. they are poorly, and tired and weak. it doesnt help they are in 3rd class with all the people of rough poverty.
